December 1st is internationally recogniSed as World AIDS Day with events and campaigns taking place around the globe through the work of UNAIDS and relevant partners engaged in the fight to stop and reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS. On December 1st, 2013 – A new regional report on the status of HIV and AIDS in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) was launched by UNAIDS under the auspices and participation of H.E. Dr. Nabil El Araby Secretary General of the League of Arab States (LAS), H.E. Dr. Maha El Rabat, Egyptian Minister of Health and Population and Ambassador Faeqa El Saleh, Deputy Secretary General for Social Affairs at the League of Arab States, President of RANAA and MENAHRA Executive Director Mr. Elie Aaraj representing civil society in the region.
The joint event held on occasion of World AIDS Day represented yet another important landmark in the strategic partnership between UNAIDS and LAS and demonstrated the highest level of commitment to ending the AIDS epidemic in the region.
UNAIDS is working closely with the League of Arab States to develop an Arab AIDS Strategy aimed at achieving the MDG targets related to HIV and AIDS. The information and policy recommendations outlined in the report provide new evidence to better strategise the HIV response in MENA.
